Clogged kitchen sinks

Kitchen lines clog slowly. Grease goes down warm, cools on the pipe wall, and catches food until one day the sink just stands there full.

Signs the clog is in the line, not the trap: water drains very slowly or not at all, a sour grease smell around the sink, gurgling when the sink drains, or water backing into the other side of a double sink.

Skip the chemical cleaners. They rarely open a grease clog and they are hard on older pipes. We run a machine through the line, clear the buildup, and flush it. Restaurants: ask about setting up regular cleanings before the dinner rush finds the problem for you.
